The three hares motif is definitely a mystery. No one knows for certain where it originated, but earliest known occurrences are in cave temples in China, and seemed to have spread along the Silk Road, making appearances on Mongol metalwork, Persian coins, ancient reliquaries in Southern Russia, and on many distinguished locations in churches and synagogues from Devon to the Ashkenaz region in Germany.
It's also presented to many simply as a puzzle. An ancient German riddle summarises it thus: three hares sharing three ears, yet every one of them has two.
